Facon is the national knife of Argentina, where it became very popular because its large and simply shaped blade proved to be ideal for everything, from butchering game and cattle to repairing saddles and preparing and eating dinner. With a blade that resembles an oversized chef's knife, Facon can trace its roots back to the 14th century, when it was used and carried by almost everyone, from farmers and slaves to the nobility. Facon was actually so popular that it crossed the Atlantic Ocean with the first European immigrants and became widespread throughout North and South America. The wide and thick blade, made of carbon steel 1090, measures a full 12" in length. The handle of the Facon is hand-carved in the traditional way from exotic Malay wood and is finished with a nickel-plated steel bolster and pommel. Even the sheath of the large Facon continues in accordance with Argentine tradition, as it is made of thick black leather, stitched with a center seam, and equipped with a decorative nickel-plated steel tip.
