KARHU - KING OF THE FORESTThe bear, the king of the forest, has many names, such as mesikämmen, otso, kontio, and nalle, in Finnish language. The name of this admired and respected animal was not to be spoken aloud. The bear symbolizes strength, endurance, and a deep connection to Finnish nature, while also embodying a motherly instinct to protect. Its habit of hibernating is associated with the ability to pause, reflect on what has happened, learn from the past, and renew oneself. In the Kalevala, the bear plays a major role and is mentioned more often than any other animal. The poems tell of the bear’s celestial origin, vengeance, and hunting rituals, but also of respect for nature.
