CRANE - SIGN OF SPRINGA crane formation in the sky signals the arrival of spring, and according to old tradition, the flight of the crane was used to predict and interpret the weather, harvest, and the strength of the ice. This magnificent bird of the cranberry bogs mates for life and enchants with its graceful dance. In many cultures, the crane symbolizes longevity, wisdom, and good fortune. The majestic bird was once believed to carry the entire sky on its shoulders – a belief that gave rise to the modern architectural term ridge beam (literally “crane beam” in Finnish), referring to the top supporting beam of a roof. In the Kalevala, the crane plays the role of a guardian, stopping the thieves of the Sampo in their tracks. Startled by Lemminkäinen’s song, the bird lets out a cry so loud that all the people of Pohjola awaken and set off in pursuit. The Finnish name for the crane originates from this very way of calling.
