Paul Alexander has quickly become a standout designer for Spyderco, known for his innovative creations. His first non-locking folder, the NAND™, introduced us to his distinctive “techno-primitive” design style, which artfully blends sleek, futuristic lines with timeless simplicity. Building on that foundation is his COBOL, showcasing his unique take on the Ball Joint Non-Locking Mechanism with a bold, Asian-inspired flair. The upswept blade is a fusion of a traditional Japanese tanto pattern and the katana-style point of the Americanized tanto. Expertly crafted from M390 particle metallurgy stainless steel, its saber ground primary bevel transitions smoothly into a flat grind at the faceted tip. At the opposite end of the blade, an extended “tail” allows for one-handed opening, reminiscent of a classic straight razor. The handle of the COBOL is constructed with solid titanium scales featuring integral spring arms and seated ball bearings. When opened, the ball bearings engage with holes in the blade's sides to secure it in place. Hand pressure on the blade’s tail and a generous choil at the base of the edge ensure a safe, secure grip. Completing the fully ambidextrous design, the COBOL includes a reversible deep-pocket wire clip, allowing for left or right-side, tip-up carry.
