Military knives, regardless of their primary function, have historically served more as essential tools for fieldwork and daily duties than as weapons. Throughout the history of standard-issue service knives, specific tenders or contracts for these purposes have been rare, though occasionally executed by astute procurement bodies. Notable examples include the M1880 Hunting and M1890 Intrenching Knife of the US Army, the rare Wehrmacht 45 combat and utility knife, and the British Army MOD Knife, which remains in use today. The HK MP7 Personal Duty Knife (PDK) continues this legacy, designed with an uncompromising focus on versatility for all tactical and practical tasks required by military and law enforcement. It meets all the demands of a tactical knife while also serving as a modern outdoor, bushcraft, and hunting tool. As a soldier's personal gear, it was named the MP7 Personal Duty Knife (PDW) in homage to the HK MP7 submachine gun, aligning with the Personal Defence Weapon (PDW) concept. It incorporates key functional features of the namesake firearm, such as ergonomics, grip texture, maneuverability, superior craftsmanship, and reliability. The centerpiece of this knife is its universal black-coated spearpoint blade, crafted from Swedish 14C28N steel. The inclusion of manganese and nitrogen (manganese enhances the solubility of nitrogen in the matrix) endows this steel with exceptional hardness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance, along with a refined microstructure. This composition boosts shock and break resilience and facilitates re-sharpening. The tang runs fully through the handle, visible at the lanyard hole, yet remains unexposed at the end to allow for pressure or a light strike with the heel of the hand. The handle is a single-piece construction made from indestructible fibreglass-reinforced nylon (FRN). A modular carrying system, utilizing a Kydex sheath, was developed for the HK MP7 PDK to accommodate all usage scenarios. The knife is securely seated in the precisely molded fit, eliminating the need for an additional fastener. Users can attach either a robust nylon belt loop or a molle-compatible steel clip.
