The History Knife & Tool Sailor's Knife stands as the quintessential and most authentic knife for international merchant shipping and naval operations. The German Navy continues to utilize these knives with only slight modifications, adhering to the technical delivery condition TL 5110-0026. At first glance, the knife may seem unassuming, yet its classic, straightforward design ensures exceptional functionality and versatility. All sailor's knives, irrespective of the maker, feature the traditional saltwater-resistant ebony handle scales secured with two brass rivets and a brass lanyard hole, complemented by a sturdy black leather sheath with a belt loop. The highlight is the thin, flat-ground, primarily straight, and subtly bulbous drop-point blade. A notable figure associated with the ‘Sailor's Knife’ due to its remarkable resemblance is Horace Sowers Kephart (1862 - 1931), a renowned travel and outdoor writer. Alongside George Washington Sears and Henry David Thoreau, Kephart is recognized as a pioneer and forefather of the modern bushcraft movement. The Kephart Knife, which he crafted and is now esteemed by enthusiasts, shares a strikingly similar silhouette to the ‘Sailor's Knife’. It remains uncertain whether and how inspiration was exchanged between the two knives. Perhaps the resemblance is simply a testament to the archetypal simplicity and uncompromising functionality of the design.
